Transmission trouble.?
I have a 1991 Chevy S-10 2wd Pick-Up with a 2.8L engine and 5 speed standard transmission. Lately my trucks been feeling like my transmission isn't gripping like it should. A friend told me it could be low on fluid/oil, whatever it uses, but I think that I just need a new clutch kit put in. I can't find any kind of hole or tube I can put oil/fluid in so I don't know if that's the problem or not. Also, I will admit I do have an oil leak that looks like its coming from the area that the engine and transmission are joined together. So what do yall think the issue is?
Would there happen to be a diagram I could possibly look at?
The transmission does make a whining noise after it's reached a certain rpm. It's a low toned noise though so would it still be it?
And how much Fluid would I use in it?
Hey there... I just answered your other question about how much fluid you need to fill it if it is empty.
Anybody that has posted an answer on here about searching for a "dipstick that says TRANS" either did not read your question thouroughly or they just don't know what the heck they are talking about.
Your transmission DOES NOT have a dipstick. It is a standard (manual) transmission which is checked by opening the fill bolt in the side of the tranny, and feeling with your pinky, or you can use a tongue depressor to see if it is level with the bottom of the fill hole. Be sure your truck is on level ground.
I do not believe your fluid level to be your problem though. Sounds to me like your clutch is bad.
And another concern that I have is that you mentioned that there is oil leaking from between the engine and tranny. This is usually a sign that your rear main seal is leaking oil from the engine. This oil could be spreading around in the bell housing and possibly greasing up your clutch plate causing it to slip. You can sometimes check this quickly by taking the starter out (one of the steps of taking the tranny out anyway) and inspecting for oil splatter.
If you smell burning oil coming from that area, this is likely the culprit. It will also cause a "whining" noise if the clutch is not grabbing properly at higher speeds, and may be chattering a little.
When you or your mechanic put in a new clutch, check out the rear main seal (behind the flywheel) and see if it is leaking before continuing.
